Some new rules about power-unit will be in force after 2020 and they will allow any new engine manufacturer to be competitive in about three years.

Ross Brawn looks to the future where a power-unit will not be a fundamental factor, or an impossible challenge to those coming from outside but looking to be involved in Formula 1. He is thinking about a system capable to stimulate those car manufacturers so far missing. It should be a system capable to help them to recover quickly that natural gap anybodycoming in must pay, when joining this motor-sport:

“Those new rules must pay attention to any new car manufacturer who would like to come-in. When new regulation will come into force, it would be necessary to give them a supplementary support. If we decided to use once again a token system, a new competitor should get more tokens to be used in the first couple of years. There are some intelligent solutions which we can use to help someone to join Formula 1”

During 2017, it is possible a definition about the future of this motor-sport from 2020 it will be finally decided: what kind of engines will be used, what system to use to boost engine noise, the amount of thermanl energy given by an engine and so on… In this process of creation of those new rules, there will be a couple of external observers interested to watch what is going to happen. Someone is saying, many of them, they are brands involved in the car market. It is not a mistery Mr. Stefano Domenicali joined those meetings, acting on behalf of Volkswagen.

Actually, the technical challenge is huge while the risk to cut a poor figure pretty high. It is very difficult to be on the same level of Mercedes and Ferrari. All those problems experienced by Honda along the last three years of involvement in Formula 1, it is the best deterrent to anybody looking to jump into this competition. A constant update done by Renault, it is another example of what kinf of challenges must be faced to join any top team in the first three positions on the grid. They are in a better shape than Honda but still fighting to improve their engines. The idea is to change this from 2020 and if there is a point of contact, this is to make simple those power-units: FOM federation and FIA, they are finally in a perfect armony.

“In the past, an engine was considered a distance between chassis and a gearshift because everybody were using exactly the same. I think, it was not a situation capable to add any value to Formula 1, there was not any difference at all.

At the same time, it can not be too wide this difference. It can not be a key point. Finding a balance, it is related from where the origin is located because it is very difficult to correct later on. It is a very difficult operation and this is creating frustration among those people involved.

Modern power-units are a wonderful engineering creation but unluckly a new subject is facing a lots of troubles to become competitive. This was proven over and over again. We do not want to make it too easy but we want to see new competitors to join us and to be able to do an acceptable job in about three years.

We are not going to discuss specific rules capable to help Honda. I am not pretending to tell Honda what they shall do to build an engine. Formula 1 can help them to be on target and that is what we will do. If Honda will come to beg for help, we will give them, if this is inside our possibilities. What we will not do, it is to create an iniquitous competition “

At Silverstone, FIA has decided to test another evolution of a canopy shield. Halo system was turned down but not the idea to protect much more Formula 1 drivers. After qualifying in Austria, FIA confirmed a coming-out of a new shield releasing some pictures about this kind of windscreen- First couple of test will be done during the week-end of 14th of July at Silverstone. It will be a short test with the idea to see what it will be the reaction of pilots and teams. Another session will be done at Monza in September. This canopy system is not different from an Aeroscreen system tested by Red Bull last season, but this one is transparent and it does not impair pilot’s visual field of view.

What is sure, it is the fact next season any car will be fit out with a cockpit protection system.
